Overview

Participants can enjoy making their own bowl using precious “Joboji urushi lacquer” (produced in Ninohe City, Iwate), of which only about 200ml can be harvested per tree with each tree grown for over 15 years. Simple and sturdy, Joboji urushi lacquerware is perfect for daily life, gaining luster with each use and able to be repaired and repainted for use in generations to come.
We will be welcoming a special craftsman (an urushi lacquer tapping and lacquering expert) from Joboji to give a demonstration and lecture on the techniques of Joboji lacquer harvesting and lacquering. If you want to learn more about urushi lacquer, you won’t want to miss this!

*The traditional technique of tapping Joboji urushi lacquer was registered as one of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritages of “Traditional Architectural Craftsmanship” in 2020. This event is being held in honor of this.

*This workshop is being held alongside the Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum’s 40th Anniversary Exhibition “The Colors and Metalwork of Nikko: Revealing the mystery behind the architectural beauty of its shrines and temples.”
