| Overview |
Participants can enjoy making a lovely strap using precious “Joboji urushi lacquer” (produced in Ninohe City, Iwate), of which only about 200ml can be harvested per tree with each tree grown for over 15 years. Participants can experience and see for themselves how lacquerware becomes more lustrous with use and polishing.
We will be welcoming a special craftsman (an urushi lacquer tapping and lacquering expert) from Joboji to give a demonstration and lecture on the techniques of Joboji lacquer harvesting and lacquering. If you want to learn more about urushi lacquer, you won’t want to miss this!
*The traditional technique of tapping Joboji urushi lacquer was registered as one of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritages of “Traditional Architectural Craftsmanship” in 2020. This event is being held in honor of this.
*This workshop is being held alongside the Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum’s 40th Anniversary Exhibition “The Colors and Metalwork of Nikko: Revealing the mystery behind the architectural beauty of its shrines and temples.”
About “urushi lacquer rash”
Some people may experience an allergy reaction to urushi lacquer and develop a rash. Symptoms such as itching can occur even if you are not in direct contact with the lacquer. All participants should join at their own discretion, as the museum is not responsible for any medical coverage.
How to prevent urushi lacquer rash and stains(clothing, protective gear, etc.)
Lacquer rash sensitivity varies from person to person, but the following are requirements and recommendations for participation as a countermeasure.
Requirements: Long sleeves, pants/long skirt, mask (no cloth masks)
Recommendations: Aprons, arm coverings, gloves (2 pairs of disposable polyethylene gloves), cream (such as Nivea) to exposed areas (neck, face, etc.)

- 1. Lecture on lacquer tapping and lacquering techniques (Approx. 30 mins. Details on tools and other lacquer related information, such as the timeline for making lacquerware including tree cultivation, lacquer tapping, woodwork, and painting, will be provided.)
2. Lacquer tapping viewing and workshop (With actual tapping of a lacquer tree)
3. Polish and complete an urushi lacquer strap (Can choose from 8 designs)
*Completed straps can be taken home on the same day
