Exhibition Outline

Azulejos are Portuguese decorative tiles painted with vivid blue colors on a white background. Fascinated by the beauty of azulejos, artist Ishii Haru traveled to Portugal to learn its traditional techniques. She continues to create art pieces using azulejos tile-making techniques, infusing her work with a uniquely Japanese aesthetic. How can a quaint, decorative tile be transformed into a contemporary art form that adorns space? We will discover the secret behind this transformation through the artist’s latest works.

Artist Profile The artist Ishii Haru began creating artwork in 1980. In 1995, she began working with azulejos in Portugal, with the President of Portugal awarding her an Order of Merit in 2010. Significant commissions include works at the Shimane Aquarium Aquas (1999), Yasuda Women’s University (2007), Kyoto Aquarium (2012), and Orix Theater (2013). Her works are also in the collections of the National Tile Museum of Portugal (Museu Nacional do Azulejo) and the Water Museum (Museu da Água).
