Exhibition Outline

A kiridashi-kogatana is a type of small blade used for fine woodwork. Before the cutter knife became widespread, it was a standard blade used for various purposes such as carpentry, bamboo craft, wood carving, children’s handicrafts, and household use. Since the kiridashi-kogatana does not have a strictly defined shape like chisels and planes, it was the only type of blade that allowed carpentry tools blacksmiths to take liberty and incorporate their own ideas. This exhibition will feature a collection of kiridashi-kogatana made by master carpentry tools blacksmiths who were able to demonstrate beauty through utility, such as Hidekazu Ishidō, Korehide Chiyozuru, Taro Chiyozuru, Teruhide Ishidō, Kōzaburō Hasegawa, and Tetsunosuke Miyano. We hope that you can come and catch a glimpse of the master craftsmen’s skills and character through these masterpieces.
