Fullscale model of a bracket complex of the Toshodaiji Temple Golden Hall <National Museum of Nature and Science> |
The highlight of this exhibition is the full-scale model of the bracket complex used in the Golden Hall of Toshodai-ji temple, measuring more than three meters in height. The model has been especially loaned by the National Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo, in order to allow the audience to understand the particular characteristics of the work of temple and shrine carpenters who deal with extremely large-sized timber. The model was produced by Ikaruga Kosha under the guidance of Tsunekazu Nishioka. It is an exhibit that is worthy of the year marking the 1300th Anniversary of Nara Heijo-kyo Capital.

The techinical drawing of Horinji Temple three story pagoda (Scale 1:10),drawn by Tsunekazu Nishioka <private collection> |
Although it is rare for carpenters to make the design themselves today, the Toryo used to take responsibilities for everything from designing to construction of a building in the old days. Here, the rare technical notes and blueprints that are hand-written by the master carpenters are displayed.
