Master Temple and shrine carpenters, or domiya daiku toryo, lead groups of craftsmen with their spirit and skills in order to build temples and shrines that can withstand adverse weathers for centuries. Their attitude of confronting difficult tasks with conviction, carrying a thousand years long tradition, is extremely attractive to us who live in a society characterized by dramatic change. This exhibition presents the work of such master shrine carpenters through impressive models, technical drawings, used tools and archive footages. It is a rare chance to gain firsthand knowledge of this attractive world.
This exhibition celebrates the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum, and is planned to tour around Japan, beginning in Tokyo, and going to Sapporo, Kobe and Nagoya.
